How CBD Can help with ADD and ADHD
This post from guest author Chett Goldin explains more. Personally, I am not a fan of medication because of the risks, side-effects, and neurological damage they can (and do) cause. (Check out Dr Peter Breggin’s work for more info on this.)

CBD can be helpful, but how many kids actually have ADD and ADHD and how many are just stressed?
Attention deficit disorder and its cousin ADD with hyperactivity (ADHD), are labels that are dished out to children with an alarming amount of regularity. The problem is not with the children, for the most part. The problem is that the schooling system hasn’t changed enough to keep pace with the demands of this generation of children.
The role of the school system in ADD/ADHD diagnoses
In countries like Finland, where the kids have a flexible syllabus, shorter school days and more of a focus on critical thinking than fact learning, it is interesting to note that kids coming from these systems enjoy far lower levels of diagnosed learning disorders. They are also scoring some of the highest marks in the STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and maths) subjects.
Why is this? Because school and learning are made more fun, more practical and definitely more relevant. The kids engage with their work which is more like creation, with much greater excitement. Contrast this with the seven-year-old child who had all the freedom in the world at pre-primary level and is now forced into a classroom situation where everybody learns the same things, in the same way, at the same pace, while wearing uniforms and enjoying a classroom setup where obedience is emphasised. It’s an industrialised, one-size-fits-all approach that simply does not work for every child. It’s no wonder we see so many kids staring out of windows dreaming of a different reality.
The outdated schooling approach stresses the brain
The emphasis on obedience and conformity prompts teachers to push parents to medicate. But what if your little angel doesn’t have ADD or even ADHD and they are just bored? Or, what if school, and all the judgements it places on young people, creates a stress that makes their brain chemistry change?
If this is the case and they are experiencing stress, then it is not surprising that we find higher than usual incidents of ADD. Stress causes blood to move from the frontal cortex, where dopamine is used, to the primitive hind brain. The moment that happens, our ability to learn becomes secondary to survival. Our senses get heightened, which explains why they are easily distracted. If your hearing and vision get amplified, you will start to perceive more stress, which causes more change in the brain chemistry.
If a child experiences stress from school, their perception can be altered, making school feel like a threatening place, or that a subject is threatening, which will create this change in body chemistry and disabling the ability to receive new information.
Aside from the problem with the teaching and learning approach in public schools, the high incidence of bullying at schools today also adds only more stress. See this post for more information.
A relaxed mind can learn much more easily (and how CBD helps)
We need kids to be relaxed in class. This is where CBD is so useful. CBD has the ability to prevent the breakdown of key relaxing hormones such as Anandamide and Adenosine, which contribute to children feeling calmer. CBD also works on balancing other neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, two key hormones responsible for feeling calm, alert, and happy.
Basically, CBD grounds the body and mind, making children feel safer and more present, which translates to better behaviour and learning.
What if stress is not the problem? (other options to help)
There is a catch though. If your child is just bored and/or the learning/teaching style doesn’t suit them (which is the case for most), then problems will persist regardless of what supplement or oil you give them.
This is where home education with its flexibility in terms of different curriculums, resources, methods, approaches, techniques, and routines becomes a major consideration.
Your child’s mental, emotional, and physical health tend to do better in an environment set up to suit their interests, needs and learning styles. In this way, you can lower the child’s stress level, address the learning challenges, and achieve a positive outcome on both counts!
Smashing pharmaceutical drugs that do the same thing as cocaine create a stress response from the body, which in the long term can be harmful to both body and mind. These drugs may be useful for boosting dopamine, but it doesn’t address the real issue, which in most cases is stress.
There is no shortcut to overcoming stress
Medication may seem like a quick fix, but studies have shown that they have a similar action to cocaine. While you may get improved behaviour, you are risking long term damage to the body which is not worth it when there are healthier alternatives for boosting dopamine and balancing neurotransmitters.
Stress should be addressed holistically – review diet, exercise, unaddressed trauma, chronic illness, negative thinking patterns and negative social influences as well. Consider getting a full physical check-up to make sure there aren’t other deficiencies playing into the body’s stress response.
A popular combination for positive results
I’ve seen most children who struggle in school benefit from a combination of essential oils, CBD and a therapy called Bars. If that doesn’t work, then I know it’s time to seriously consider a change of school.

Are CBD Products Safe to Use for Children? Quick Guide for Parents
CBD is becoming a more common way for people to help reduce pain, anxiety, and improve sleep. So, it begs the question, can children use CBD products too?
Although more studies need to be conducted, CBD use for kids looks as if it can be beneficial. There is already a CBD-based medication called Epidiolex used to treat rare and severe forms of epilepsy in children two years of age or older. CBD products still have not been FDA approved but are being continuously researched and used.
For children suffering from chronic pain , anxiety, ADHD, or autism, CBD could help them. And we know that parents want the best for their children. So, here is a quick guide to what CBD is, what it can help with, and concerns about using CBD products for children.

What is CBD?
CBD stands for Cannabidiol, extracted from legally and organically grown hemp plants. Hemp is natural and regularly used for clothing and seeds for cosmetics.
CBD is different from marijuana because hemp contains less concentrated amounts of THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is known for the psychoactive abilities that give the “high” effect of marijuana. CBD isn’t considered a psychoactive element, which allows the legal usage of CBD products.
Why Can CBD Work?
CBD can work within our body because of our endocannabinoid or ECS system . CBD lessens the transmitters that tell your body to spark pain. This results in people reporting reduced pain after using CBD products.
Your body naturally produces cannabinoids that influence hormone release, regulating how the cells communicate, send, receive, or process messages. Cannabinoid receptors can affect your mood, appetite, pain, or varying cognitive functions.
CBD can help soothe pain and provide a more comforting feeling to your body. For children, this can be beneficial if they are in pain or have anxiety . The CBD can help them manage their pain and return to a normal life.
What Can Children Use CBD For?
Most people use CBD to help reduce pain, inflammation, and improve digestion and sleep. Similarly, children can use CBD to treat those similar medical problems. However, some parents give their children CBD for ADHD and anxiety.
Some parents don’t want to medicate their children and turn to CBD as an alternative to help their children with ADHD. The effects of CBD can help calm children down and reduce their symptoms. Some effects noted by parents giving their children CBD for ADHD are:
- Better sleep
- Balanced moods
- Healthier appetites
- Better eating habits
- Fewer tantrums and quicker de-escalation
- Better focus/concentration
Similarly, parents have turned to CBD to help their child’s anxiety, a common symptom associated with ADHD. Reducing their anxiety can help children sleep better at night and return to healthy social interactions.

What Are Some Concerns About Giving CBD to Children?
It must be emphasized that researching CBD in children is still in the beginning stages. As stated previously, only one CBD-based medication that the FDA approves for use in kids. That raises a lot of concern for parents. So, here are some common concerns to look out for.
Choosing Your CBD Product
Some products can be unreliable in delivering consistent amounts of CBD. They could have more or less CBD than advertised. Since CBD products aren’t FDA approved, they aren’t regulated the way medications are.
When choosing the right CBD product for you or your child, it’s important that the products are third-party lab tested. Having the products tested means that it can be ensured that the hemp is grown organically without pesticides, heavy metals, microbes, or solvents. Red Raven CBD products offer Organically Grown USDA Hemp CBD products that are tested.
How Much CBD is Absorbed?
There isn’t much known about how much CBD is actually delivered to the brain in a given product. The delivery method of vaping, ingesting, or using topical substances all have different delivery rates. It isn’t easy to know how much is absorbed and for how long in children.
The type of product can also vary the result. With the combination of how CBD is taken, the size of your child, and the kind of CBD product you’re using, it’s hard to dictate how much a child should take.
How Much CBD Can a Child Have?
Since no official studies can prove how much CBD a child can handle, it’s hard to tell how much they should have. A blog provided a reference to how a child’s dosage should be. It’s advised to start with small doses and then adjust from there.
Talking with your physician is also crucial if your child should have CBD. Some medications don’t work with children for various issues like ADHD or anxiety. Discussing CBD as an alternative to prescribed medications can be a good idea.
How to Avoid THC Products
Some may be concerned that the CBD product they buy for their child may contain THC. One way to ensure that it doesn’t is if the product is third-party lab tested. This can eliminate the stress that the CBD product could contain THC.
Another way is by choosing the right kind of product . If you’re considering an oil, there are a few different options.
- Isolate (CBD Only)
- Full Spectrum CBD Oil
- Broad Spectrum CBD Oil
The difference between them is the chemical compound content found in each product. CBD isolate only contains CBD, often in a crystal or powder form. Full-spectrum CBD has the same components of cannabinoids and other plant compounds but includes small amounts of THC. Broad-spectrum CBD contains all cannabinoids and plant compounds other than THC. For your child, it could be a good idea to stick with CBD isolate only or broad-spectrum to stay away from THC.

CBD Can Affect Other Medications
If your child is taking medications, it’s advised to speak with your pediatrician before administering CBD. It can be known to change the way your body metabolizes because CBD interacts with your liver, which will change the effect that medications have on the body. So, if your child has liver problems or is taking certain medications, it’s advised to speak with a health care professional before your child has CBD.
Change of Sleeping Patterns
Some parents use CBD products to help their children sleep at night. While improving their sleep can benefit their overall health, they could become tolerant to CBD. If they become tolerant, there is a possibility that they could experience worsened sleep problems if they stop taking CBD regularly.
While some parents choose to avoid over-the-counter melatonin for their kids, CBD is their other alternative. However, they can become similar if the child becomes reliant on either melatonin or CBD to help them sleep at night. A possibility of avoiding this situation can be limiting how many times per week your child uses CBD to help them sleep.
What are the Possible Side Effects?
As mentioned before, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done in the CBD industry, particularly for children. It is essential to look at the level of CBD in these products. Children shouldn’t be given too much.
Although the long-term effects of CBD are unknown, a few adverse effects of CBD use can include:
- Seizures in toddlers
- Liver harm
- Interactions with other medication
- Vomiting, fever, or drowsiness with overdose
Be sure to watch the CBD’s effects on your child before continuing the administration or increasing the dosage.
