Arthritis Foundation Survey: Nearly 80% of Arthritis Patients Are, Have, or Are Considering Using CBD
Having to manage the chronic pain that comes with arthritis each day can be a huge balancing act. Individuals with arthritis are desperately seeking ways of reducing their pain and improving their sleep as well as their overall ability to function. These days, it’s common for individuals with arthritis to look into CBD (cannabidiol) for their arthritis pain.
The Arthritis Foundation recently sent out a survey regarding CBD use for arthritis, and over 2,600 individuals with arthritis answered. Those with various types of arthritis answered. Fifty-two percent of the respondents have been living with osteoarthritis, and 45 percent with rheumatoid arthritis for 10 years or more. Results of the survey found:
- Seventy-nine percent surveyed were presently using CBD, have used it previously or are at least considering it.
- Twenty-nine percent report they presently use it for managing their arthritis symptoms.
- Sixty-three percent of those presently using CBD use it daily, and 26 percent use it a few times a week.
- Sixty-two percent of those surveyed use the liquid form of it, and 55 percent use a topical they apply to their joints.
The Arthritis Foundation, being the largest organization that represents the needs and voice of individuals with arthritis, has always welcomed new options of treatment, since no one medication, therapy, or supplement works for all people. They believe those with arthritis should have the right to find their own safe management methods appropriate for them. And, the more options out there, the more likelihood that more individuals will benefit.
The Arthritis Foundation is intrigued by CBD’s potential in helping individuals find pain relief, and are urging the FDA to speed up the research and regulation of these products.
How CBD Could Help With Arthritis Symptoms
Breeders extract CBD from the hemp plant, a variation of cannabis that doesn’t have the same psychoactive effects of the different varieties grown for marijuana. Products infused with CBD are booming, and are easier and easier to purchase online and in various clinics and stores. Industry reports show individuals who purchase CBD report arthritis pain or other arthritis symptoms as their main reason for buying CBD.
Animal studies suggest CBD may help treat arthritis, and the associated inflammatory pain that comes with it. In fact:
- A study in 2011 showed CBD helped decrease inflammatory pain in rats by impacting how their pain receptors react to stimuli.
- A review in 2014 of existing animal research showed CBD could be an effective OA treatment.
- A study in 2016 showed topical CBD application had the potential to relieve inflammation and pain linked with arthritis.
- A study in 2017 showed CBD may be a useful and safe OA treatment for joint pain.
How to Use CBD
If you’re wanting to try CBD products, the Arthritis Foundation suggests CBD oil in either liquid drops or sprays that you would hold under your tongue for a minimum of a minute. This will allow the product to go straight into your bloodstream.
The Foundation advises against vaping CBD, particularly with the investigation of vaping-linked respiratory conditions leaving hundreds hospitalized, and eight killed.
They also said CBD could potentially interact with some medicines like corticosteroids, naproxen (Aleve), and some anti-depressants.
Treat Arthritis Symptoms with a CBD-Infused Pillow
You might want to give a CBD-infused pillow a try. These are soft and comfortable pillows infused with CBD. They may help ease your arthritis symptoms like pain and inflammation, but rather than placing CBD drops under your tongue or applying a topical, you’ll simply rest your head on a pillow.
The CBD-infused pillow releases microdoses of CBD and other active ingredients while you sleep during the night. Your skin absorbs these ingredients, and transports them throughout your body where they go on to reinforce other antioxidants, and disarm free radicals.
Each pillow comes with a number of certifications, including a no heavy metals certification, no THC certification, and no moisture content certification. They also hold the GreenGuard Gold and CertiPUR certifications. Try a free trial for yourself, and start sleeping on your own CBD-infused pillow, so you can begin experiencing relief from your arthritis symptoms.

How can I use CBD to treat Arthritis?
There are various ways in which you can start using CBD. Some of these have been mentioned below:
Use a Topical Salve
A topical salve will play a key role in relieving discomfort from your joints as well as muscles. Even though you will easily find them in your local dispensary, you might find it tough to get hold of these products in regions where weed is not legalized. But there is hardly any reason to worry since it is possible to buy a salve which has been designed for managing joint pain in particular.
Vaping Or Smoking
Inhalation works the fastest and you can just stop as soon as you feel you’ve had enough. This method is recommended if you are experiencing severe pain and need fast relief. Within about 30 min of inhalation, you should experience the full effects of the CBD and the feeling could last between 1 and 4 hours, depending on how much you inhaled. This method may not be available for everyone depending on which country you live in and if the laws are a bit stringent.
This method is taking the CBD oil under your tongue. This is commonly done with a dropper, or you can measure your desired amount. The word tincture usually refers to something which is extracted with alcohol, but some CBD tinctures are extracted using the CO2 method. This method of extraction is the best because it is the cleanest and most efficient. In the case of alcohol extraction, some toxic residues can be left behind.
Sample all the Strain Types
It is a fact that Indicas, Sativas, and Hybrids have their own strengths as well as drawbacks. Therefore, make it a point to try all types of strains out there and see which is going to work in your case. Bear in mind that CBD-heavy strains can be extremely useful in calming and relaxing a patient especially if they are struggling with painful joints and sore muscles.
What is Research Saying About Using CBD for Arthritis?
At present, almost 50% of the people who are more than 65 years of age are struggling with arthritis in the US alone. It has been estimated that around 60 million adults, plus many children are suffering from this painful condition these days, many studies have been conducted to prove the effectiveness of CBD in treating arthritis. In the subsequent paragraphs, we have penned down a few of those studies along with their results.
According to a study which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2000, arthritic symptoms were induced in several mice by scientists artificially 10 . The animals were then treated with CBD. As a matter of fact, CBD was administered both orally and by injection and it was found that CBD helped in slowing down the progression of damage to the joints.
Brightfield Group, which happens to be a cannabis-research firm, conducted a survey on as many as 2,400 individuals suffering from persistent arthritis in the year 2017 11 . In this particular study, it was revealed that the consumers of CBD oil expressed their satisfaction after using the product. In fact, it was later found that 42% of those folks had quit other pharmaceutical medicines in favor of CBD.
