Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a neurological condition of the Central, Autonomic, Sympathetic & Enteric Nervous Systems and people who suffer from Chronic Pain, such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, (CRPS), and others like chronic migraines, neuropathies, spasticity’s, joint pain, HIV, cancer are looking to solve their pain, fight nausea and help battle weight loss from inability to eat.

How Can Marijuana Help?
But, many people are either not able to take prescription medications, or they choose not to. As there is no cure for the disease, and while there are several pharmaceutical treatments available by prescription from your doctor, not everyone is comfortable putting medications which cause harsh side effects and long-lasting effects into their bodies. The numerous treatments and medications available from the FDA to help treat the symptoms of CRPS, and the symptoms from the treatments and pharmaceuticals are either filled with chemicals that cause severe, damaging side effects, or they puncture the skin (which many doctors believe cause spreading due to the impact to the Autonomic Nervous System) many feel that they are left with little options to fight the pain that comes with CRPS. Marijuana can help with the following:
- Lessen pain
- Eliminate nausea
- Increase energy
- Increase appetite
- Improve the quality of life
Turning to marijuana, a natural plant, seems very natural to many, and it quickly becomes legal in many states under a recreational drug, or under a prescription as “medical marijuana” or “MMJ”. For others that are desperate to find relief, they are buying the drug on the black market.
The question is, how do sufferers of CRPS know which strain to buy? How do all of these different strains of Medical Marijuana stack up to what people with chronic pain need?
How Does Medical Marijuana Work to Help the Pain of CRPS?
Marijuana, or cannabis, comes in many different strains, but most chronic pain sufferers use Indica and Sativa strains because they alleviate nausea to a similar degree. Marijuana contains compounds called cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that relieve pain, eliminate nausea, and help with some of the other symptoms. Medicinal marijuana can work wonders on the brain, this is because the brain has two types of receptors – CB1 and CB2. The CB1 receptors are in the brain whereas the CB2 are everywhere else in the body and in the central nervous system.
Medicinal marijuana has 2 substances – THC and CBD. THC works on the CB1 receptors (hence the psychrotrophic effects) and CBD works on CB2 (which is everywhere else) and helps with pain relief and autoimmune dysfunction. But, for medical marijuana to work, both THC and CBD have to be together, and separating them is not as effective.
THC vs. CBD
The interesting thing that many people don’t understand is that THC and cannabinoid are compounds that resemble THC cannabinoid chemicals that occur naturally in the body. When someone uses Medical Marijuana, either by inhalation or ingestion, that THC from the plant actually stimulates the brain’s natural receptors. The activates the reward system and then reduces the pain levels in the body. Because THC is a psychoactive compound, as it binds to the brains cannabinoid receptors, it actually produces an elevated state of mind. This is where the term “high” comes from.
Cannabidiol (CBD) alone has no tetrahydrocannabinol THC in it, therefore it has no psychoactive state, and no “high”. Alone, it is able to interact with pain receptors in the brain to exert anti-inflammatory effects and it is still capable of exerting pain-relieving effects, although some say it is just not as powerful without the THC as there is a much better effect when both parts work together to achieve the “entourage effect”
Indica Strains for CRPS-Related Pain
Indica is a great strain for its sedative and calming effects. It is best for those that are looking for relaxation and provides the most amount of physical effect on the body versus the psychotropic effects on the head.
According to marijuanadoctors.com , they state the most popular painkilling indica strains include:
- Granddaddy Purple: A potent indica for strong, body-wide relief
- Bubba Kush: Provides tranquility and euphoria
- Northern Lights: Relieves stress and depression
- Blue Cheese: An indica crossbred for maximum relaxation
- Purple Kush: Promotes a good night’s sleep
Sativa Strains for CRPS-Related Pain
Sativa is much different than Indica, and in contrast, it provides energy and a very euphoric feeling those who suffer from depression and fatigue. While Indica makes sufferers feel relaxed and tired, Sativa helps energize.
According to marijuanadoctors.com , they state the most popular Sativa strains best known for relieving pain include:
- Sour Diesel: Stimulates creativity and offers clarity
- Green Crack: Improves energy and focus
- Jack Herer: Lifts mood and energizes
- Durban Poison: Sharply energizes and uplifts
- Lemon Haze: Enhances appetite
Hybrid Strains for CRPS-Related Pain
Most of the time, cross-breeds are by default, hybrid strains with significant concentrations of both Sativa and Indica. When mixed, each type balances out the other side effects. You will want to try different mixes and strains to see what works best for you, based on your lifestyle, and what symptoms you are looking to solve for.
According to marijuanadoctors.com , mentions these notable hybrid strains to try include:
- Blue Dream: Can be Indica-leaning orSativaa-leaning
- Girl Scout Cookies: Boosts mood and lets you unwind
- White Widow: Gives more energy without overstimulation
- Trainwreck: A sativa-dominant strain balanced out with some Indica
- Cheese: An indica-dominant strain evened out with a bit of sativa
National Marijuana Day – 4/20
Learn how April 20th (4/20) became the “National Marijuana Day” every year.
A common misconception is that “420” is the number of chemicals in the weed or that it is police radio code for marijuana smoking. Neither are true.
CBD oil for chronic pain
Well I hadn’t either until I was reading through some online Blogs where the product was being reviewed for Chronic Pain. So I immediately contacted the company, The Fay Farm and was asked to review 2 of their Products.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”
As I do with most products that may offer some kind of hope or may be a useful tool for my pain, I get pretty excited. I find this reaction rather comical as many of the things I try end up not working and I waste money. I guess it is just the optimist in me that is holding on to some hope that one of these days, my disease (CRPS/RSD) will be cured.
What makes me an expert on Pain??
Just a little information about the disease that I have so you understand the pain level I live with on a daily basis. (CRPS or RSD Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or Regional sympathetic Dystrophy.) The pain associated with this disease is ranked higher than natural childbirth and amputation . Most of the days I feel like my feet (the limbs that are affected) are on fire. Recently I have had to take a leave from work due to the severity of the pain. With CRPS, you also deal with highly sensitivity called alloydonia (where the covers can’t even touch my feet and I can’t get shoes and socks on). Somedays even touching my feet is not possible. I have also been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and have pain body wide.
Products I am Reviewing:
The 2 products I was asked to review are The Warming CBD Muscle Rub & The Rejuvenation Lotion (also contains CBD oil). The Warming CBD Muscle Rub claims: is a best seller at The Fay Farm and has been designed for anyone with rheumatoid arthritis,
fibromyalgia, muscle and joint stiffness, strained, sprained and tired muscles. Infused herbs with both warming and cooling essential oils provide deep soothing relief. Made with organic in¬gredients: Sunflower oil, castor oil, olive oil, beeswax, shea butter, menthol, camphor, cayenne pepper, arnica, essential oils of rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint, ginger, cassia, and clove (The Fay Farm)
The Rejuvenation lotion, The Fay Farm describes it as a blend of herbs and essential oils designed to relieve joint and muscle pain. Use our Rejuvenation Lotion when applying to areas that need to be absorbed quickly, like hips, knees, shoulders, etc. Notes of vanilla from peru balsam essential oil complimented with a delicious top note of camphor makes for a mild, almost decadent aroma. Made with organic ingredients: Purified water, hemp oil, grape seed oil, apricot kernel oil, emulsifying wax, stearic acid, argan oil, magnesium, white sesame oil, jojoba oil, essential oils, 200 mg. CBD oil, fennel, licorice, turmeric, valerian, gluconolactone and sodium benzoate (certified organic preservative).
Finding out if this really works….
My product from The Fay Farm arrived within 2 days! It was well packaged and I instantly loved the label. Fate would have it that I had just gotten home from my Physical Therapy session in the pool and I was exhausted & in quite a bit of pain. I collapsed in the recliner and opened up the Muscle Warming Rub and gently rubbed it on my feet. Within minutes the pain in my feet had subsided about 5 points on the pain scale! (I was in an 8-9 level of pain and went down to a 3-5). I thought it was a fluke and decided I would have to keep trying this for a week before I got on the internet and sing it’s praises.
My dad happened to be at the house around the same time. He has Lyme disease and recently has had 2 knee and a hip replacement due to his joints deteriorating. He was also a skeptic but rubbed a little of the muscle warming on his aching knee. One hour later I got a text, saying he was in Walmart, walking around with no pain. Days later he was still raving about the relief that the rub had given!! ( guess I know what he will like for his birthday!)
So was I. I continued to use the Warming Muscle Rub and continued to get results. Every single time I used it, I felt better and it lessened my pain. I liked the smell and it was small enough to put in my purse on the go. This was my favorite of the two products and I honestly recommend the product to everyone even if you don’t have chronic pain! This product will take care of any sore neck or back ache you may encounter.
For The Rejuvenation lotion, I tried to use on my feet but it caused them to have a burning sensation (with RSD this is typical of most things so I want to caution those of you who may use that lotion on your RSD/CRPS limb). When I rubbed on my back or my legs when they were pain, it also dulled the pain and didn’t burn like it had on my feet. Overall, I would use this for aches and pains before I would go to bed at night.
So what is this CBD oil stuff any way.
This stuff worked so well that I began to get interested in the CBD oil and did quite a bit of research. (Those of you who live with a Chronic Pain, you know you end up doing a lot of research yourself and even “enlightening” your medical team.) If you type in CBD oil in Pinterest you will find tons of blogs and articles on CBD oil for fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Health Review reports: Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive component of Cannabis that seems to have a wide range of therapeutic benefits. CBD is naturally occurring in the Hemp plant and according to the United States own government patent #6,630,507 “it supports the nutritional health of aging bodies. Cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.”
So it is a part of the cannibis plant but CBD is not the component that gets you high… that is THC. CBD typically has less than 1% of THC so rubbing this oil on your feet is not going to make you feel anything, except for a decrease in pain. Much of the research actually shows that we are finding out that for the last 70 years we didn’t know much about the Cannabis plant & the healing components that CBD provides.
Other areas where CBD may be helpful includes:
Fibromyalgia, CRPS/RSD, Anxiety, Inflammation, Spasms, Sleep Disorders, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Alcoholism, MS, Schizophrenia, PTSD, Epilepsy, Neuro Disorders, Parkinson’s (just to name a few)
But that isn’t the only thing that makes The Fay Farm products special!
This is a direct quote from Michael, co-owner of the Fay Farm, “I would like to stress that the difference in our products is not because of the CBD oil we use. There is a variation in quality that can be perceived in the final product, but the true difference maker in our products is our infused herbs. No other company our size or larger infuses herbs the way we do and that creates the entourage effect that amplifies the beneficial properties of the CBD used. There is also a tipping point that gets reached with efficacy in terms of concentration of CBD used in a topical. Between 25 to 30 milligrams per ounce of topical solution, efficacy is maximized. More CBD added does not appreciably increase the effect.” These products are definitely something special!
Go ahead and get ya some!
In Conclusion these two products that I reviewed, The CBD Muscle Warming & The Rejuvenation Lotion are both going into my regime of tools that I use to manage CRPS and Fibromyalgia pain that I have. I don’t know about you but I spend thousands of dollars on prescriptions from big pharma every year and this is offering so much hope for many diagnosis without the Side effects. You heard it here first… This is the Bee’s Knees and I am sure this is not the last CBD oil product that I will review..so stay tuned!
