People all over the world are taking CBD. And they’re finding new applications of the supplement almost every year. Cannabidiol, or CBD, has recently been researched for use by people with high blood pressure.
We looked into the science behind the research, and took a serious eye to whether there’s any indication that CBD actually works for high blood pressure. Then we reviewed five CBD products that we picked for their specific benefits. If you still have questions at the end, please check out the FAQs
Does CBD Lower Blood Pressure?
We want to give the reader as simple an answer as possible, and a direct one. But because we’re dealing with a serious medical issue that can have dire outcomes, we want to be extremely careful.
To begin with, we should talk for a quick moment about the difference between preventative medicine and remedial medicine. An easy example of the difference is our diet. If we eat less fat and sugar, that’s preventative. If we don’t change our diet, we need to exercise more, which is remedial, or “of a remedy.”
With high blood pressure you should look at what can be done on the front end of the problem. No medication or supplement is better for your heart and arteries than clean living. But if you already have high blood pressure, and you want to remedy the symptoms, then you can take certain medications.
Now we look at what has caused the high blood pressure to see what CBD can do to alleviate the symptoms. The not-so-good news is that we didn’t find a lot of evidence to support CBD treating plaque in arteries or any blood clotting issues. That means that if your high blood pressure is due to either of those causes, CBD may not be the remedy for you.
The great news is we found several studies supporting that CBD doses due lower blood pressure caused by hypertension. We’ll link them a bit later on. First we’ll explain how this works. If your blood pressure is high because of stress, anxiety, or acute onset due to high-pressure situations with increased heart rate, then CBD has been shown to lower the blood pressure in people like you.
The first and oldest study we found is available here at the US National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. This study found that acute (or immediate or short term) application of CBD lowers blood pressure in cases where the blood pressure is caused by increased heart rate. The second study was conducted and published in 2019 in Brazil, and you can read it here. In it, researchers found that when assigned to give a public speech, participants who took CBD had lower blood pressure readings.
Finally, we found a study from last year that you can read here that supports not only lower blood pressure in people with hypertension, but also people with high cholesterol and people with obesity. Because this was the only study we found that supported help with obesity and cholesterol related high blood pressure, we are not as confident that CBD can help as reliably as it can with hypertension.

What is High Blood Pressure?
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects 33% of adults over the age of 20 – 1 in every 3. Those numbers double to 66% for adults that are in their mid-60s or older. Tens of millions face suffering from high blood pressure in the United States alone. High blood pressure is a measurable, dynamic vital sign we can observe in all humans. The numbers indicate how much pressure is being applied to the blood flow throughout the internal vein network of the human body. As you move throughout your day, this blood pressure level changes based on all the emotional, physical, and environmental stimuli around you.
While your blood pressure fluctuates, there’s a normal range that it can fall and rise with. Roughly one-third of American adults rise well above the normal range for blood pressure levels. Chronically elevating pressure in one of the thinnest networks throughout the body, hypertension is what contributes to over 400 thousand deaths annually. It’s a high-risk, long-term condition that plagues millions of people across the globe. A vicious rising trend with no end in sight, we look at alternative remedies that may aid in relief for some symptoms associated with high blood pressure – or even high blood pressure itself. Many are turning away from pharmaceuticals for a more natural approach, which is just one of the reasons so many are picking up CBD.
Can CBD Oil Lower Blood Pressure?
The short answer? Yes, CBD could very well cause some modest drop in a person’s blood pressure levels when taken in high doses. We’re going to dive into how CBD works in the body to affect one’s blood pressure more in-depth, though. In this guide, we’ll also look at ways CBD might benefit someone with high blood pressure and tips for someone with low blood pressure who still wants to use CBD oil. Before we get started, it’s important to mention that if you’re new or unfamiliar with CBD or you’re taking any other prescription medication, please consult with a certified medical professional or your physician before getting on a CBD regimen. Some drugs can interact with CBD, and you only want to add a supplement if it will add to your current routine.
How Can CBD Help with High Blood Pressure?
Cannabidiol doesn’t just work in one way to potentially reduce high blood pressure. There are a few functions CBD effects in the body that have a direct role in blood pressure levels. First, some factors attributed to having high blood pressure are stress, anxiety, lack of sleep and fatigue. Some studies suggest that CBD can help manage and lower the symptoms of all three. Heightening clarity and focus, reducing anxiety levels, and helping to lower stress could also help with balancing blood pressure levels to some degree.
CBD can stimulate calming effects. When you’re able to relax and feel calm, your blood pressure levels decrease in time with your heart rate to respond accordingly. Vasodilators are medicines that causes blood to flow more easily throughout the body by dilating or widening the blood vessels. A natural vasodilator, CBD can help improve positive cardiovascular health. As high blood pressure can damage the heart and arteries, cannabidiol acting as a natural medicine to allow the blood to flow smoothly and easily is a welcome addition.
Finally, cannabidiol has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Since inflammation can trigger high blood pressure, or vice versa, something that combats inflammation outright is great to have on your side. You can use a CBD topical cream to relieve specific target areas or a CBD oil tincture or other consumable that allows for general and full body relief.
Is Using CBD Safe?
In a comprehensive update on the side effects and safety of CBD with a review of relevant animal studies and clinical data, the National Institute of Health tested daily doses of up to 300 milligrams of CBD supplements in pill form consistently for six months. Finding the supplements could be used safely even in such high doses, they also tested daily pill doses for 1,200 and 1,500 milligrams for up to four weeks.
Finding the supplements could be used safely even in such high doses, they also tested daily pill doses for 1,200 and 1,500 milligrams for up to four weeks. In addition, sublingual dosing through a 2.5mg dose of CBD spray was used safely for two weeks.
Overall, the data found CBD to be considered safe, though we still don’t know for how long and at what quantity until further research is done. The Harvard Health Letter states potential mild side effects of CBD include drowsiness, lightheadedness, low blood pressure, fatigue, irritability, nausea, and upset stomach, or diarrhea. However, the formula used, how it’s consumed, and the quality of the other ingredients in the formula can play a huge role on these side effects.
Benefits of Using CBD Oil for High Blood Pressure
The best part about using CBD oil for high blood pressure is that because you’re ingesting it to get relief from hypertension, you’re also reaping all the other benefits it can provide.
Using a CBD oil tincture for a sublingual dose to get the maximum level of cannabidiol absorbed means it works the fastest and likely the longest. Many report relief from chronic pain, depression, and much more. When you take CBD specifically for blood pressure, you can’t help but also experience the general wellness it promotes by regulating your endocannabinoid system. CBD doesn’t just help with symptoms that are most likely to cause high blood pressure, however. It can specifically lower blood pressure, too – even with just a single dose.
In a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled crossover study of healthy volunteers, nine males were either given a placebo or 600mg of CBD. They used a laser Doppler and a finometer to monitor cardiovascular parameters of the volunteers. In the study, cannabidiol maintained cardiac output and reduced resting systolic blood pressure. The subjects that took the real dose of CBD had a lower blood pressure count, increased heart rate, and a decreased stroke volume. Though more research is vital before we can establish that CBD has a role in some cardiovascular disorder treatments, the study’s data shows that precise administration of cannabidiol can reduce both the resting blood pressure and blood pressure caused by an increase in stress to humans.
In a related 2019 Brazilian study, researchers looked at the effect CBD has on anxiety and stress related to public speaking. As environmentally-motivated stress can increase blood pressure, the findings show further promise that CBD can help reduce blood pressure. The group that took a medium dose (300mg) of CBD experienced the most notable reduced stress response, indicating that CBD can help reduce stressful environmental factors given the optimal dosage for it.
Potential Concerns with Using CBD for Maintaining or Reducing Blood Pressure
While these studies show us an optimistic light for CBD’s future, it’s important to mention the risks involved with any natural chemical compound. We don’t yet have enough conclusive evidence to determine that CBD is an effective treatment for any condition other than the ones approved by the FDA. Most evidence has been gathered through healthy volunteers or through animal studies, both of which implies we may see different results with an ill human subject. Combination of CBD with other high blood pressure medication is the biggest potential concern if you plan on using CBD for your hypertension. If you are already prescribed high blood pressure medication, taking CBD in combination can lower your blood pressure too much. “Too low” is just as bad as “too high,” so you’ll want to speak with your physician before adding CBD onto the medication you’re already taking. Your doctor may want to reduce the dosage strength you’re taking for your other blood pressure prescription before incorporating a CBD oil into your daily regimen.
In addition, CBD is not just a cure-all for high blood pressure – on the contrary, it’s merely a tool that can be used in tangent with other tools to help lower your blood pressure consistently. You can safely manage hypertension by reducing and managing the stress in your life, performing daily activities that get you up and moving, improving your diet, and eliminating or at least reducing the use of alcohol and tobacco. Lowering your high blood pressure with CBD oil won’t do much if you don’t follow up with a lifestyle change that continues to improve your health. Start utilizing a CBD oil today to reduce your blood pressure and experience the other benefits that will allow you to live a lighter, healthier lifestyle overall.
